Mission
Jessica Kos Birney & Young Yokes is pleased to host an after school kids yoga program at Enatai Elementary!
We will take great care in the introduction of yoga to your child, sharing age-appropriate and applicable poses, breathing, and mindfulness work. Kids yoga classes are not the same as adult classes, that's for sure. We encourage communication, laughter, curiousity, and community. We will move, sing, dance, play; and then we will learn to harness our work to practice things like stillness, listening, and body awareness. At this age, yoga is not about doing poses "right" but about the experience of the pose in connection with every day values and goals. Tree pose for example can feel wobbly but what can you do to keep from being blown over!
As a teacher I focus heavily on what kids CAN do and empower them to celebrate that space. Class size will be limited to around 20 students, so please register soon to save your space. We have a lot of fun and I look forward to working with your children.
What are the Benefits of a Kids Yoga Practice?
Think full-body; muscles, bones, heart, lungs, mind, & energy; yoga has shown through research that it can have a tremendous impact on kids and support their performance at school or on the sports field. If you have interest in learning more, I highly recommend the website Yoga4 Classrooms as they have compiled and maintain the largest catalog of kids yoga research to date.
In our classes we will also discuss and apply important life lessons like what it means to be strong in all aspects of life; body, mind, heart, and community. We will tackle a different topic each week while applying this work to the physical poses and experiences at school.

About Jessica
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your interest in the Enatai Yoga Club. Here's a bit about me... I am first a mom of two at Enatai Elementary; Halsten is in 4th grade and Selma in 2nd. I love being a mom and I absolutely adore having fun with kids through yoga.
I have been a certified adult yoga teacher for over 20 years, eek! I am also a Registered Children's Yoga Teacher (RCYT) with Yoga Alliance, meaning the I've completed over 95 training hours and have taught well more than 30 hours of kids yoga. After the birth of Selma, I worked to co-create a company called Young Yokes Kids Yoga, a non-profit based in Denver, Colorado that works to teach and train other adults to be kids yoga teachers. Of course, we also taught lots of kids in the process and it was a dream come true to have my kids in class with me (although tough) and apply the principles of yoga; present moment awareness, contentment, and gratitude.
This yoga club has been on my mind since moving here in 2019 but with COVID and such the timing has been less than ideal. I did have the pleasure of working in Ms. Henry's class when Halsten was a kindergartner for a hot second before we scrambled into quarantine. I included on this page the Enatai Yoga Quarantine video that we recoded for this occasion. This will give you a feel of how fun yoga for the young ones can be. You can also see additional videos from my family and other Young Yokes instructors, just click here.
I hope that this is the first of many sessions. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any support.
